The news broke Sunday evening, and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders was quick to respond after the death.
"God please comfort the Ponder family, friends & Loved ones," Sanders wrote in a statement. "Dom was one of my favorites! He was Loved, Respected & a Born Leader. Let's pray for all that knew him & had the opportunity to be in his presence. Lord you’re receiving a good 1. Comfort us Lord Comfort us. #CoachPrime."
In a feature about the death, Thomas Goldkamp of On3 stated, "at 6-foot-5, 200-pound quarterback, Dominiq Ponder, had become a team favorite despite not having a huge impact on the field for the Buffaloes. He spent two years at Colorado after transferring in from Bethune-Cookman."

He added that the player "did not see game action at Bethune-Cookman in his first year on campus and redshirted before transferring to Colorado. He had hoped to rekindle his college career there."
...Fellow backup quarterback Colton Allen shared his thoughts about Ponder on Instagram on March 1.
“Dom, you were a blessing to so many people,” Allen stated in his post. “You had a presence about you that just made everything better. You brought so much joy to me and everyone around you."
He continued, "I’m grateful for every lift, every practice, every rep, every conversation we got to share. I’ll carry those with me for the rest of my life. What happened feels so final. It feels heavy. It hurts.”
