In only his second game at the helm, Liam Rosenior's Chelsea host Arsenal for the first leg of their 2025/26 Carabao Cup semi-final tie. There were seven yellow cards and a first-half red for Moises Caicedo the last time these bitter rivals met, a bad-tempered affair that saw 10-man Chelsea take the lead through a Trevoh Chalobah header and Mikel Merino hit back minutes later – resulting in their third draw in as many meetings at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues yet again conceded from a set-piece, which will be of particular concern against Mikel Arteta's set-piece specialists, while the Gunners fell behind early and fluffed numerous openings, including a penalty that Noni Madueke put wide. Although Gabriel Martinelli scored his first senior hat-trick, he could easily have had twice that.
Caicedo is suspended tonight due to an accumulation of yellow cards, which leaves an enormous vacuum at the center of Chelsea's midfield. While skipper Enzo Fernandez has popped up with some important goals this season, his discipline and all-around contribution remain severely lacking.
The concern for Arsenal fans is that Arteta's fears are spilling out onto the pitch. The Spaniard, who hasn't won a trophy since 2020, has always been defense-first, and Viktor Gyokeres has now scored once from open play in his last 15 league games, while Eberechi Eze has struggled for game time since his switch from Crystal Palace. once again, he's been left on the bench.
